The Archer
Once
upon a long time ago in the here and now there was an archer
of prodigious talent who, although he practised every day,
was always eager to learn more about his craft. So, one day,
he selected his best bows and his finest arrows and he set
off to search the whole of England for an archer of even
greater talent with whom he might study and rise to greater
accomplishments.
After many months and countless farms and hamlets, villages
and towns our weary traveller came upon a tree with a
painted target and an arrow buried dead-centre in the
bull’s-eye. As he walked on he came upon another tree and
another tree, all with a perfectly centred bull’s-eyes. Now,
curious and trying to control his eagerness, he hurried
through the forest. Everywhere he looked he was constantly
presented with the sight of straight arrows dead-centre in
round targets.
Eventually the archer came to a clearing and in the clearing
was a substantial barn built from the wood of the forest. It
was amazing. On each of the wooden planks there were yet
more round targets and all had an arrow dead-centre. “At
last,” he thought, “I have found the very man I seek. Here I
shall truly learn how to improve my skills.”
Finding nobody at the barn, but seeing smoke rising from a
nearby village, he went to enquire about the owner of the
amazing barn. The people of the village directed him to a
small cottage on the edge of the settlement and there he
found a man of middling years with a childlike demeanour and
somewhat ungainly movements.
Not willing to prejudge the situation our archer introduced
himself, told the man of his quest, and asked, hesitatingly,
if he would be willing to share the secrets of such
consistent and unerring marksmanship.
The man nodded and smiled. “Certainly,” he said, “Anyone can
do it. After I shoot the arrow I just get some paint and
draw the target.”
