The Battleship

Once upon a time many years ago in the here and now there was a far away land that’s just next door where a battleship had been on manoeuvres in heavy weather for several days. The captain was concerned about the deteriorating conditions, so he decided to stay on the bridge for the night to keep an eye on things.

Shortly after dark the lookout on the bridge suddenly shouted, “A light dead ahead, captain!”

“Is it steady or moving?” asked the captain.

The lookout confirmed that it was steady, which meant that the battleship was apparently on a dangerous collision course with the other ship.

The captain then called to the signalman, “Signal that ship: ‘We are on a collision course. Advise you change your heading 20 degrees starboard.’”

Back came the response: “Advise you change your heading 20 degrees port.”

Annoyed at such arrogance the captain said, “Signal: ‘I am a naval captain, change your heading 20 degrees starboard.’”

The reply came, “I am a civilian. I advise you alter course 20 degrees port.”

By now the captain was furious. He shouted, “Send: ‘This is the battleship Mighty Warrior on official manoeuvres. I order you to alter your heading 20 degrees starboard!’”

Back came the flashing light: “This is the Black Rocks lighthouse.”
