The Enormous Dwarf

One day a young prince was on his travels and he came across a very pleasant, walled town. He stayed for a few days and was made welcome by the people. Then, one day he awoke to find the gates to the town closed and barricaded and the people trembling with fear. When he asked what was going on the prince was told that every few weeks a huge man-eating giant came to a hill about a mile out of town and demanded a sacrifice to be made to him. If he was not given a person to eat, he threatened to come and destroy the whole town. The prince asked why they did not stand and fight the giant, but the people were too afraid to even look outside the gates.

The prince felt sorry for the people of the town and although he was very scared, he offered to go out and slay the giant. The townsfolk thought he was mad and they begged him not to go, but at the same time they dreaded having to select the next person to be sacrificed to the giant.

So, the prince armed himself with his sword and shield and stepped outside the gates to face the giant. There, in the distance he could see the giant standing on the hill outside the town. Trembling and shaking, he drew in a deep breath and marched towards the giant. As he got closer he trembled even more and had to force himself to carry on.

 

And then he noticed that the giant seemed to be getting smaller. The closer he got, instead of getting larger, the giant looked smaller. Eventually he got to within a few yards of the giant and he could see that he wasn't a giant at all. Finally he got to within a foot of the giant and he was amazed to find that in fact it was a dwarf, no more than 3 feet tall. The prince found this incredible and he leaned over the little man and said "Who are you?" And the little man said "My name is Fear".
