The Two Seas
The Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee
are both found in the Holy Land. Both are fed by the same
primary source – the Jordan River. But one
is very much alive, while the other has neither fish, nor
macroscopic aquatic organisms living in it.
Why is that?
The Sea of Galilee is
only alive because what flows in also flows out. The Dead
Sea has no outlet and the accumulation of salt has killed
all life.
The Role of Salt
Sodium chloride is essential in the
nutritional and physiological processes of all animals,
including humans. It is a necessary part of all body tissues
and fluids.
The amount and concentration in the
body must be maintained within narrow limits, through a
large number of physiological mechanisms. These mechanisms
control the concentration and secretion of salt so that the
amount eliminated balances with the amount taken in with
food.
If salt concentrations are greatly
disturbed and are either too high or too low (usually caused
by disease), death may result. Our bodies contain
approximately 70% water. The human body also has
approximately the same salinity as the oceans. The kidneys
are the major organ that adjusts the level of sodium.
In life giving is as
necessary as receiving to thrive and feel alive and, as
important as salt is, too much is as bad as too little.
