Do you expect your team to work more productively than it does?

We often acknowledge, if only privately, that the mind of another individual is unfathomable — "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma". Put just two or three people together with a common purpose and you have a team; you cannot avoid it. Yet teams, as necessary as they are, multiply the dynamics. They even form a life and personality of their own, distinct from their constituent members.

In a team people with often hugely diverse backgrounds, work-styles and belief systems are asked to set aside differences and suddenly start working as one. In many cases the challenge is compounded because the team leader will have considerable technical or subject matter expertise, but little aptitude, expertise or formal training in how to manage and motivate psychologically complex human beings.

Forming a team to address an issue does not guarantee a great result - or any result at all. Building unity, motivating a team to release its full potential and realise its purpose, organising and monitoring its performance — these are not small tasks.

In your dreams can bring the awareness, skills, knowledge and experience which are key to doing these things effectively. Our independence and professional detachment means we remain focus on the outcome, rather than getting caught up in the process.

Your first success has been recognising the need for assistance.
Your second is having the good sense to call for it.
